A typical start to a cup tie, 100mph end to endbut with Kilbowie Union seeting out their stall as a back to front pressurising team. Against this type of team the defence has to be on top of their game but alas for Busby we weren't quite at the rces today. That said, the loss of the first goal in 11 mins came from some lazy play in midfield allowing the Kilbowie player to cut inside, push forward unleash a 30 yard drive which evaded Scott Kennedy(who was a bit slow getting down) in goal. However, the better football from Busby was a telling factor and when we moved the ball quick Kilbowie could not cope - two goals from John Connolly in 20 and 27 minutes gave Busby a 2-1 lead whch they took to half time. The long ball from Kilbowie was proving to be effective and casing mistakes being made and silly fouls being made by the Busby defence. This was recognised by the management team and advice was given on this at the half time team talk.
Early in the second half Busby had some lovely quick interplay (which Kilbowie couldn't cope with) from midfield to front giving John Connoll hat trick from a cool finish. 3 -1 and surely the half time advice on defending would allow us to see out the game. Not so it proved with poor defending allowing the ball to drop to the Kilbowie player 6 yards from goal - what a gift which he didn't let pass by, lashing the ball high into the Busby net. 3-2 and Busby knew they were in game. Busby then took a leaf out of Kilbowie's book when a long long kick from Scott Kennedy's hands evaded the Kilbowie defenders and dropped to John Connolly who held the ball up and then laid it off to Davy Congalton who took a neat first touch and then slotted the ball past the Kilbowie keeper. Surerly, at 4-2 Busby would not make the same mistake of letting Kilbowie back into the game but like "Groundhog Day" they did and Kilbowie pulled it back to 4-3. Nervy times for Busby and made more so when Davy Congalton got sent off 7 minutes from time - from the sidelines he was heard to give the ref advice about not keeping up with play and given that the ref was consistent all game in pulling up players for backchat, it was no surprise. Seven minutes to hold out but for some inexplicable reason(s) the ref played 5 minutes of additional time and cue Kilbowie mounting an aerial bombardment of the Busby box for a full 12 minutes.. Hold out we did and now it's st Joseph's in the semi a week on Monday. Busby were excellent going forward and that type of play could just win them the semi but if we continue to be shaky in defence !!!!!!
