Busby GGP XI 1 - 7 Partick West: Wed 27 Aug

The Greater Glasgow team, minus 3 or 4 regulars faced Partick West (Div 1 runners up) in a league cup tie. Whether they would have made a difference is another matter because this Partick West team showed why they were runners up by delivering a football lesson. They were skilful, clever, organised, disciplined and fit and controlled this match from start to finish. Busby were second to every ball and hardly won anything in the air and just could not cope either man to man or as a team. I had plenty of notes on the play but , in truth, this match report would be all about Partick West - good players one and all with a cracking wee left back.
The second half showed Busby fight with a bit more spirit but they could not change the course of the match. Since we couldn't match their football we could have tried squeeze the play by pushing right upfield (something that Partick West did well) which would have then left the Busby defence wide open to the the quickness of the Partick West midfield and forwards. Quite a problem and not one that Busby could solve. Being beaten by a better team happens but I was disappointed by the 2nd half indiscipline of the Busby team especially the verbals directed at the referee - will we never learn that this does not work. Given this, it was no surprise that the Busby keeper took the long walk for swearing at the referee. Any bright spots, well yes, some nice passing but infrequently and a lovely free kick goal from Stuart Kinloch
